{"id":1039,"date":"2011-01-28T15:18:20","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T20:18:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/?p=1039"},"modified":"2011-01-28T15:18:20","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T20:18:20","slug":"measuring-the-white-space-in-your-business-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/2011\/01\/28\/measuring-the-white-space-in-your-business-planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Mind the Gap: Measuring the \u201cWhite Space\u201d in Your Business Planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1042\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Judy-Nolan-Rolls-Royce.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1042\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1042 \" title=\"Judy Nolan - Rolls Royce\" src=\"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Judy-Nolan-Rolls-Royce-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Judy Nolan - Rolls Royce<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We all know that you should measure processes.\u00a0 There is a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=showObjects&amp;objectTypeID=20\">literature<\/a> written on this subject, and most companies now have some sort of Lean or Six Sigma program and quality management system that requires processes to be measured for evaluation and improvement purposes.\u00a0 Control is another big aspect of metrics.\u00a0 One of the things that I believe companies commonly miss is that they do not focus on the way performance measures motivate their staff.<\/p>\n<p>Where I live, there are two bus companies.\u00a0 From the behavior of the bus drivers, one can easily guess how performance measures motivate them. \u00a0.\u00a0 Buses from Company A will not stop unless you are standing right next to an official bus stop and vigorously signal that you want the bus to stop \u2013 usually by jumping up and down in front of the bus. \u00a0The amount of effort required to stop the bus is not only quite high but risky as well. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Buses from Company B will stop if you are vaguely near a bus stop and look like you may like to have a ride on a bus.\u00a0 You can quite easily stop a bus that you never had any intention of catching.\u00a0 The metrics may be that Bus Company A is focused on it\u2019s adherence to a timetable and Bus Company B is focused on the number of passengers it services.\u00a0 This would explain how the different drivers are motivated to behave in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>The evaluation, improvement and control focus of performance measures usually results in one of two types of measures. \u00a0These are measures within a department and measures across two or more competing departments.\u00a0 This is what motivates people to be insular in their thinking causing a lack of focus on the customer.<\/p>\n<p>I think that an additional type of metric is required that focuses on the customer rather than how a particular department can best benefit.\u00a0 This creates \u201cWhite Space,\u201d which is the area between boxes or functions on an organizational chart.\u00a0 And primary processes cross these white spaces.\u00a0 To see how to measure the white space and see an example of what Rolls-Royce has done in this area, come and see me at the IBF<a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/conferences.cfm?fuseaction=conferenceDetail&amp;conID=296\"> conference in Orlando<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Hear Judy, Forecasting Process Manager<br \/>\nRolls Royce<br \/>\nSpeak At IBF&#8217;s <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Orlando-Feb-Banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1047\" title=\"Orlando Feb Banner\" src=\"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Orlando-Feb-Banner.jpg\" alt=\"IBF's Supply Chain Forecasting &amp;
