Looking back, I know now that this turned out to be the worst possible time to break into the field.\u00a0 At Ingersoll Rand<strong>, <\/strong>we were just starting to feel the initial pains of \u2018The Great Recession\u2019, but our system forecasts did not provide the data we needed to prepare.\u00a0\u00a0 Our business had been showing consistent growth for some time and thus, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=Home\">system forecasts<\/a> followed the same pattern.\u00a0 As a result, what followed in 2009 was a mad scramble. \u00a0Our team was constantly making revisions to the demand plan until we felt that we had hit bottom.\u00a0 When volumes started rising in late 2009, we had a similar problem.\u00a0 However, as a result of this new problem our system forecasts were not keeping up with the actual demand in the marketplace.\u00a0 I knew there had to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/conferences.cfm?fuseaction=conferenceDetail&amp;conID=296\">better way to calibrate our future demand<\/a> with economic cycles.<\/p>\n<p>A solution came in the form of an economic model which we developed for different segments of our business.\u00a0 During our presentation at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/conferences.cfm?fuseaction=conferenceDetail&amp;conID=296\">Supply Chain Forecasting &amp; Planning Conference<\/a> in Orlando Barbara Bennett, a Senior Analyst at ITR, will be giving an overview of the information needed to develop the very same economic model.\u00a0 This will include providing those in attendance with an understanding of economic phases, leading and lagging indicators, and how these things apply to the rate of change for your business.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I will be discussing how my company, Ingersoll Rand, used the information we attained as a result of this model and incorporated it into the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/conferences.cfm?fuseaction=conferenceDetail&amp;conID=307\">demand planning process<\/a>.\u00a0 This will include detailed explanations of how to calculate your rate of change and how to compare it to the economic model.\u00a0 I will also discuss what to do when your data doesn\u2019t match the prediction of the economic model.\u00a0 I look forward to seeing you and discussing our journey to better demand planning in Orlando!<\/p>\n<p>Jason Gustafson<br \/>\nMarketing Demand Planning Manager<br \/>\nIngersoll Rand Industrial Technologies &#8211; Americas<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Hear Jason Speak at <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ibf.org\/conferences.cfm?fuseaction=conferenceDetail&amp;conID=296\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1047\" title=\"Orlando Feb Banner\" src=\"https:\/\/demand-planning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Orlando-Feb-Banner.jpg\" alt=\"IBF's Supply Chain Forecasting &amp; Planning Conference\" width=\"448\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started my demand planning career in the summer of 2008.
